In 1999, economist Andrew Lawrence created the "skyscraper index." The index showed that building record breaking skyscrapers usually followed very neatly the boom and bust of business cycles: Record breaking skyscrapers are envisioned in the height of a boom and usually completed on the eve of an economic downturn. The higher these world record- breaking skyscrapers go the lower the stock market index falls. When skyscrapers break world records they are also likely to signal a breakdown in their respective economies' financial systems.
